Course Synopsis:
A Will is a cornerstone of estate planning that enables individuals to determine how their assets will be distributed after death. This course provides an overview of the legal principles governing Wills in Singapore and examines the key differences between testate and intestate succession for both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Participants will explore the operation of Faraid, the Intestate Succession Act, CPF and insurance nominations, property ownership arrangements, and other important estate planning considerations. Through practical examples and common scenarios, the course helps learners understand how a properly prepared Will can provide clarity, minimise disputes, and facilitate the efficient transfer of assets.
Course Outline:
By the end of the session, learners will be able to: –
- Understand the purpose and legal requirements of a valid Will in Singapore.
- Differentiate between testate and intestate succession.
- Explain the key differences between Muslim and non-Muslim estate distribution.
- Understand the application of Faraid and the Intestate Succession Act.
- Identify assets that may not be governed by a Will, including CPF and insurance nominations.
- Understand how property ownership structures affect estate distribution.
- Recognise the role of Wills within a broader estate planning framework.
ABOUT THE TRAINER
Mr Mohammed Shakirin
Shakirin is an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and the Managing Director of Adel Law LLC. His areas of practice include conveyancing, property law, commercial and civil disputes, family law, criminal matters, and corporate advisory work.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the National University of Singapore, a Master of Science in Economic History from the London School of Economics, and a First Class Honours degree in Economics from the University of London.
Prior to legal practice, Shakirin taught undergraduate students in Singapore. Combining legal expertise with teaching experience, he is known for presenting complex legal concepts in a practical, clear, and engaging manner, enabling learners to apply legal principles confidently in real-world situations.
