Course Synopsis:

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is one of the most important legal tools in personal and estate planning. This course introduces participants to the purpose and significance of an LPA, the consequences of losing mental capacity without one, and how an appointed Donee can manage personal welfare and property affairs on behalf of a donor.

Participants will gain insights into the Mental Capacity Act, the court deputyship process, eligibility requirements, powers and responsibilities of Donees, and the different LPA options available in Singapore. The course also explores practical considerations when selecting a Donee and how an LPA complements other estate planning instruments such as Wills, Advance Care Plans (ACP), and Advance Medical Directives (AMD).

By the end of the session, learners will be able to: –

  • Understand the purpose and legal significance of a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).
  • Explain the consequences of losing mental capacity without an LPA.
  • Distinguish between a court-appointed Deputy and an appointed Donee.
  • Identify the powers, duties, and responsibilities of a Donee.
  • Understand the application process and requirements for creating an LPA.
  • Evaluate the factors involved in selecting suitable Donees and replacement Donees.
  • Appreciate how an LPA forms part of a comprehensive estate planning strategy.

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Mr Mohammed Shakirin

Shakirin is an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and the Managing Director of Adel Law LLC. His areas of practice include conveyancing, property law, commercial and civil disputes, family law, criminal matters, and corporate advisory work.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the National University of Singapore, a Master of Science in Economic History from the London School of Economics, and a First Class Honours degree in Economics from the University of London.

Prior to legal practice, Shakirin taught undergraduate students in Singapore. Combining legal expertise with teaching experience, he is known for presenting complex legal concepts in a practical, clear, and engaging manner, enabling learners to apply legal principles confidently in real-world situations.
